First your dental hygienist will begin your cleaning by exploring the surface of your teeth to determine whether or not you have any carries or cavities, and to examine the quality of your existing fillings.
Your dental hygienist will then perform a periodontal exam to make sure that your gums properly adhere to your teeth. If this is not the case, periodontal disease or bone loss may be occurring and you will be informed of this.
Next, your dental hygienist will carefully clean your teeth with a variety of tools that remove any hard mineral buildup (tartar and plaque).
After the deep cleaning, your hygienist will floss your teeth and then apply a polishing compound and apply a fluoride varnish to the surface of your teeth which makes your teeth more resistant to tooth decay.

Recommendations
If we find signs of tooth decay or gum disease, we will talk to you about our findings. We’ll talk to you about changing your brushing or flossing habits, and in severe cases we’ll recommend antibiotics or other dental treatments.
If your teeth and gums appear to be healthy, your dentist will probably recommend that you continue your brushing and flossing routine as usual.
